A general surgeon is an expert in the diagnosis and care of patients with diseases affecting the abdomen, digestive tract, endocrine system, breast, and skin.

Laparoscopic surgical approach involves a smaller incision than traditional “open” surgeries, resulting in less trauma to nearby healthy tissue, which can lessen your post-op pain and scarring, as well as speed recovery. Our general surgeons will decide the best surgical approach to meet your surgical needs.

South County Health General Surgeons can perform a variety of surgical treatments, including:

  • Anal pathology including hemorrhoids, anal polyps and fissures
  • Breast surgery
  • Chemo port insertion
  • Cholecystectomy (robotic and laparoscopic)
  • Colon surgery/colectomy (robotic and laparoscopic)
  • Disease of the appendix
  • Inguinal hernia repair (robotic and open)
  • Pilonidal disease
  • Small bowel surgery
  • Skin and soft tissue surgery for sebaceous cyst, lipoma, melanoma,
abscess, lymph node excisional biopsy, skin/soft tissue masses, and
    infection
  • Umbilical and ventral hernia repair (robotic and open)

Minimally-Invasive Surgeries For Faster Healing

With technical advances today, surgery does not necessarily mean large incisions and long healing times, as in the past. Depending on the type of surgery, there are several methods that may be used:

An "open" surgery means the cutting of skin and tissues so that the surgeon has a full view of the structures or organs involved. Examples of open surgery are the removal of organs, such as the gallbladder or kidneys.

Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (stomach) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. This procedure is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Robotic surgery, also called robotic-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions. It is also sometimes used in certain traditional open surgical procedures.

da Vinci®

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System assists surgeons in using minimally invasive techniques. With da Vinci, surgeons can perform procedures through smaller incisions in the skin than those made using open surgical techniques.. The expert surgeons on South County Health's medical staff who are trained on da Vinci have performed over 2,000 procedures to date using the technology.
