Navigating healthcare can be daunting. For Ed Cunnie, a resident of Rhode Island since 1976, South County Health has emerged as more than just a medical institution, it’s become a trusted ally in his healthcare decisions.

From routine check-ups to significant surgical interventions, his experiences with South County Health have not only left an indelible mark but also instilled a sense of confidence in the quality of care provided.

As South County Health gears up for an upcoming men's health screening event on June 15, Ed’s story serves as a testament to the importance of proactive healthcare management and the profound impact it can have on one's life.

A Familiar Haven: Choosing South County Health

“First of all, we moved to Rhode Island in August of 1976. We always felt South County Hospital to be logistically more ideal. Pediatricians for our three children, as well as the Primary for my wife and me, were also associated with South County Hospital.”

From Knee Replacements to Hernia Repairs: Building Trust in Surgical Expertise

“From a surgical standpoint, Dr. Marchand [Robert Marchand, MD Orthopedic Surgeon, Ortho Rhode Island] performed a Total Knee Replacement in November of 2013. It was actually my first ever overnight stay in a hospital even at the age of 76. I must admit to having trepidations; however, the procedure was successful, and I came away with good feelings of the care provided by the surgeon, nursing staff, and South County Hospital.

Fast forward to December 2023. During my annual physical it was determined I was developing an inguinal hernia. I was referred to Dr. Delmonico [Theodore Delmonico, MD, General Surgeon, South County Health]. My office visit with Dr. Delmonico confirmed the need for surgery. At this point, the hernia had extended somewhat, and it became obvious that surgery should be scheduled at the earliest possible time.”

Health Matters: Hernia – The abdomen is covered in layers of muscle and strong tissue that help you move and protect internal organs. A hernia is a gap in this muscular wall that allows the contents inside the abdomen to protrude outward. There are different types of hernias, but the most common hernias occur in the belly or groin areas. Hernias are more common in men, though they can develop in anyone.

Navigating Pre-Op to Post-Op: A Seamless Experience

“I visited Dr. Delmonico on January 5, at which time he thoroughly outlined the cause of the hernia and the surgical procedural steps and the recovery cycle. At no time was there any hesitation on my part. Surgery was scheduled for January 18, but due to the onset of a case of the flu, surgery was readily rescheduled for February 29 and the pre-op instructions were covered over the phone, which was fine with me. The surgery was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and although there was a little confusion as to how to get to check-in due to construction, the Volunteers were great in guiding my wife and me.

The post-op visit with Dr. Delmonico was performed on March 27. He advised that the hernia had extended over a larger area, but he was pleased with the overall recovery and healing of the three incision points of entry.”

A Bond Beyond Healthcare: Finding Comfort in Compassion

“Perhaps one of the highlights of this whole procedure was not only the professionalism of the nursing staff, but the sense of a caring nature across the board, especially the pre-op prep nurse. One outstanding note: South County Hospital’s philosophy to allow a patient’s spouse to remain by their side right up to the time of transfer to the OR. You cannot imagine how reassuring that was for both of us.”

Embracing Recovery and Advocating for Proactive Health Management

“After an advised precautionary period, I am back up to speed with my spring cleanup activities, which, in my case, is a form of therapy. In retrospect, I would advise anyone that develops a Hernia to attend to treatment at their earliest convenience. Even more importantly, I would strongly recommend the Robotic Mesh Implant Procedure. It is relatively painless, and the recovery period is minimal when compared to “Open Field” procedures of the past.”

Choosing Excellence: A Call to Action
