Karen McCormick, Emergency Department Ward Secretary

Meet Karen McCormick. This Emergency Department Ward Secretary with over two decades of experience at South County Health shares some of the highlights of her professional path within our organization. From Patient Registration in the Emergency Department, to coding, back to the ED, Karen has found friendship, challenge, growth, leadership, and teamwork in her roles.

Helping Patients Every Shift

I began my journey at SCH in 1998 as a Patient Registration representative in the Emergency Department. I remained in this position for 6 years, when a position became available in our coding department.

A Different Path

I decided to give coding a try since I had received certification in coding. I enjoyed the experience, however it wasn’t exactly for me. I just wasn’t happy sitting in an office. I missed my position in the ED!

Coming Home to the ED

I love helping others. I am definitely a people person and enjoy the fast-paced environment of the ED. I also worked per diem in our EKG department for 2 years, another fast-paced unit.

When a position became available in the same place, I began my journey and exactly where my heart was, I knew what I wanted to do. I applied for the Unit Secretary position in the Emergency Department.

A Steady Captain in Times of Crisis

This is where I have remained for 19 years! I have had so many mentors along the way, including doctors, nurses, managers, and those I work alongside every day! I have made so many amazing friendships, many I consider family!

SCH has truly been a huge part of my life. I’ve dedicated 25 years to SCH and plan on many more. I’m not going to say it has always been easy, because being what many have referred to as the “Captain of the ship” in the ED can become very challenging at times, however I feel very confident in my role and love being a valuable asset to my coworkers.

If you are looking into a new career, I highly recommend SCH. It’s a great place to work!

Outside of the ED

A little about me: I am the proud Mom of three beautiful children: Troy, Tyler, and Katelyn. Also the proud NaNa of three beautiful granddaughters: Reagan, Ruby, and Ruthie.

In my time away from work, I enjoy being with family. I love taking care of my granddaughters and spending time with my husband. I also enjoy the outdoors, horseback riding, sports (hockey & football are my favorite), and I love traveling, and playing softball!
